Pieced Together: Ford House Exhibition Celebrates Inspiration through Quilts and Collages

Edsel & Eleanor Ford House continues its emphasis on inspiration, creativity, design and expression with the opening of its newest exhibition, Pieced Together: Inspirations in Collages and Quilts. The exhibit showcases two artists, Suzanne Marshall and Eleanor Winters, who gain their inspiration from the world around them. The exhibit runs exclusively at Ford House Feb. 6 through March 28.

Suzanne Marshall uses fabric to create traditional quilted works of art that reflect international people, places and events. Eleanor Winters creates small scale works of paper and calligraphy inspired by traditional quilt design and by magnificent stained glass windows in European cathedral. The artisans will exhibit their works and present workshops on the process they use to express their inspiration.

“Inspiration can come from any experience as we see, feel, smell, taste and hear the world around us,” said Kathleen Mullins, president of ford House. “It may come from the beauty of nature, the majesty of a building, the enjoyment of a different food, the entrancement of a musical passage, or the scent of a garden. We encourage the public to come and be inspired both through the exhibit and in accompanying workshops with the artists.”

Pieced Together is free and open to the public Tuesday – Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

To kick off the exhibition, Suzanne Marshall will lead “Don’t Bug Me!” a design and appliqué workshop on Feb. 6 from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Participants will design their own “bug” block using an assortment of bug, flower and leaf patterns, and will begin the appliqué on an original block they designed. The workshop is $55 for members and $65 for non-members, and includes a continental breakfast. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (313) 884-4222.

Suzanne Marshall, author of “Take-Away Appliqué” and “Adventure & Appliqué,” has won numerous awards for her works and her quilts. “Toujours Nouveau” and “Mother’s Day” are in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Quilter’s Society in Paducah, Ky. She has received international acclaim and her works have been featured in the books “America’s Heritage Quilts,” “The Quilt Encyclopedia Illustrated,” “Great American Quilts 1994” and “QUILTS, A Living Tradition.” Marshall uses fabric to create quilted works of art that reflect international people, places and events.

Eleanor Winters’ work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe. The title “Calligraphy Quilt Collage” describes the materials, the method and the source of inspiration for her artwork. A commercial calligrapher and lettering artist for 35 years, Winters started her personal quilt project in the early 1990s. She creates small scale works of paper and calligraphy inspired by traditional quilt designs and magnificent stained glass windows in European cathedrals.

During the exhibition, guided tours of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House are available Tuesday – Friday at noon and 1:30 p.m. and are offered every half hour from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission for tours is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $6 for children over 5. Children 5 and under are free. No advanced reservations are required.
