Three Giant Steps Back in Time |
Edsel & Eleanor Ford House is pleased to partner with Wayne County Community College District's School of Continuing Education in the presenation of "Three Giant Steps Back in Time: A Look Back at the Detroit River/Lake St. Clair Region in the 1700s-1800s-1900s." on Saturday, March 6 at WCCCD's University Square.
Ford House Vice President of Collections & Interpretation David Janssen will give a presentation focusing on the 1900s, entitled "A Grosse Pointe Estate: The Creation of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House." The presentation description:
The Grosse Pointe communities were transformed in the 1900s. The French ribbon farms along the shores of Lake St. Clair gradually gave way to the seasonal cottages of the growing middle class, and then the sprawling estates of the wealthy. One of the final estates created – and the only remaining – was the home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. Set on 125 acres, the eventual home to the Ford family began as scores of smaller plots of land purchased by Edsel’s parents, Henry and Clara Ford. The creation of the estate, the life of the Ford family, and the survival of the property reflect the history of the Grosse Pointes in the 20th Century.
Other partners in the day long event are The Grosse Pointe Historical Society, The Grosse Pointe Public LIbrary, Harper Woods Library and St. Clair Shores Historical Commission.
WCCCD's University Square is located at 19305 Vernier Rd in Harper Woods. The event is free and open to the public and reservations are recommended. Please call 313.886.2425.
