Home Sweet Home: Ford House Accepting Entries to
Annual Gingerbread House Contest and Display

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich., (Nov. 4, 2009) – Add a little sugar and spice to this holiday season by entering Edsel & Eleanor Ford House’s second annual “Homes for the Holidays” gingerbread house contest and display. Ford House is calling for all to put on their baker’s hat, grab a pastry bag and get to work on creating a gingerbread masterpiece. The theme of the 2009 contest is “Memories,” which will allow entrants to share special places in their lives.

The contest is open to all metropolitan Detroit area residents in five categories:
  • Children (individuals, ages 11 and under)
  • Youth (individuals aged 12- 18)
  • Groups (scouts, families church, schools, businesses/organizations)
  • Adult (individuals over the age of 18)

Pastry chefs from Macomb Culinary Institute and a local bakery will select a winner from each category, based on originality, creativity, degree of difficulty as well as overall appearance and adhering to guidelines. For the People’s Choice award, the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite structure.

Following the contest, the gingerbread houses will be placed on display in the Ford House Activities Center from December 6-20, where thousands of visitors to Ford House can enjoy them.

There is no fee for entering the “Homes for the Holidays” contest and display, but advanced registration is required. Registration is due to Ford House by Nov. 30. Gingerbread houses must be delivered to Ford House on Dec. 4 or Dec. 5 and will be on display at the Ford House Activities Center from Dec. 6-20.

To help kick off the festivities, Ford House will host a Gingerbread House workshop for children on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Ford House Activities Center. Participating children will decorate their own whimsical gingerbread houses and enjoy hot chocolate with Santa. The workshop fee is $25 per child and chaperone. Please call (313) 884-4222 to make a reservation.
