Sirens of Chrome Exhibit Bring Automotive Sizzle to
Edsel & Eleanor Ford House this Summer
Exhibit tracing the 100-year history of women and auto shows
ends Labor Day
They’ve been called models, sex symbols and eye candy…as well as informative, knowledgeable and engaging automotive specialists. The fascinating women of the auto shows and the progression of their role in selling cars is the focus of the exhibit, Sirens of Chrome, which ends its run at Ford House on Monday, September 6.
Sirens of Chrome takes visitors on a visual joyride through auto show history and features a treasure trove of rare images of turn-of-the-century goddesses, 1950s sex symbols and today’s highly trained product specialists. The exhibit showcases posters and photographs of human hood ornaments, fast cars and vintage auto show fashions.
“The talent at auto shows throughout the past century have actually gone though as much of an evolution as the cars themselves,” said Margery Krevsky, founder and owner of Productions Plus–The Talent Shop, a nationwide go-to company that recruits, outfits and trains talent for auto shows, and author of the award-winning book, Sirens of Chrome: The Enduring Allure of Auto Show Models, which served as the muse for the exhibition. “Auto show models truly morphed from ‘plaster to poster to person’ and now serve as ambassadors of their brand who entice customers with facts and vehicle comparison information.”
Following the format of the book, the “Sirens of Chrome” exhibit includes many historical photos that have been carefully culled from private collections, auto enthusiast portfolios and the National Automotive Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library that tell the larger story of auto show models and the timeless allure of automobiles.
According to Ford House President Kathleen Mullins, featuring Sirens of Chrome at Ford House is a nice fit following the North American International Auto Show. “After Ford House was highlighted in the Lincoln display at this year’s Auto Show, we became intrigued with role of the auto show model. We saw firsthand the knowledge and training that the product specialists – as they’re now known – receive and we couldn’t help but want to share the illustrious history and evolution with our visitors.”
Attendees of the “Sirens of Chrome” exhibit will discover whose “body” inspired the Rolls-Royce hood ornament and who sat in a “rumble seat” with 1930s silver-screen goddess Joan Blondell. They will see the depth of information included from the Dagmar Bumpers, gawk at the over-the-top opulence of the Somali leopard pelt-upholstered 1950 Cadillac Debutante and view in wonder at the fur-clad model atop a Soviet-built Lada. In total, the exhibit features nearly 75 pieces, some of which are photographs, posters, auto show programs and automobile magazine covers. Also on display will be auto show apparel courtesy of Production Plus–The Talent Shop, which has its own wardrobe department with an in-house fashion design team that creates original fashions for its clients and often tours a collection of vintage auto show fashions.
Admittance to the exhibit is included with the purchase of general admission: $12, adults, $11 seniors, $7 children ages five and older. Grounds and outerbuildings-only admission is $5 per person over the age of five. 30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
