There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas at Ford House
Ford House decks the halls for the holidays and introduces new “Santa’s Workshop”

Santa’s workshop moves from the North Pole to Edsel & Eleanor Ford House (Ford House) this holiday season as the historic estate celebrates the season with an array of specially themed tours, dinners, events and much more.

New this year is a Santa’s Workshop feature in the estate’s South Cottage, inspired by the Santa’s Workshop that Henry and Clara Ford erected each year at their home, Fair Lane in Dearborn. During Christmastime in the 1930s and 40s, child visitors experienced a special trip to “Santa’s Workshop” – a log cabin filled with workbenches and shelves of toys, horse-drawn sleigh rides through the woods and visits with Santa.

The new exhibit at Ford House will celebrate this legacy with photos and memorabilia from Henry and Clara Ford’s version of Santa’s Workshop - along with antique toys and historic images - all wrapped up in festive décor. Santa flies into the exhibit on Saturdays in December to meet and greet children, and youngsters will have hands on activities and crafts.

In honor of the Ford Family’s tradition of giving, Ford House is partnering with The Children’s Center to help make the holidays special for area children in need. Visitors who bring a new, unwrapped toy to be donated to The Children’s Center will receive $2 off general admission. Toys will benefit families in need in Detroit and Wayne County.

“Our focus this year is to make the Ford family’s tradition of giving at the holidays come alive for area families,” said Kathleen Mullins, president of Ford House. “We’re pleased to continue this spirit of giving with a new generation and invite your family to create memories that will last for years to come.”

The mainstay of the season, Holiday Tours at Ford House, will begin on Nov. 25. For years, guests have stepped back in time and through the estate’s majestic arch off Lake Shore Rd. to experience the sights and sounds of the season - just as the Ford Family did for nearly 50 years. From the 15-foot Christmas Tree in The Gallery to Eleanor’s angel figurines placed on window ledges to Josephine Ford’s charming play house adorned in nursery rhyme inspired decorations, Ford House’s holiday transformation both enchants and delights.

Christmastime at Ford House offers an intimate peek into the lives of one of America’s most beloved families as they adorned their home and celebrated family traditions. Visitors experience the breathtaking décor reflecting Edsel and Eleanor Ford’s love of design and relive the family’s treasured moments spent together at the estate.

Holiday Tours at Ford House, which include a guided tour of the house and a visit to Santa’s Workshop and Play House, are offered daily Tuesday through Sunday, Nov. 25-Dec. 31. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 seniors and $8 children ages 6-12.
