Ford House Celebrates Arbor Day by Planting Trees
Posted: April 28, 2017

“Trees are much like human beings and enjoy each other's company. Only a few love to be alone.” -- Ford House Landscape Architect Jens Jensen

At Ford House, we love our trees -- all 86 acres of them! On Arbor Day, we are wearing our love of leafy things on our sleeves by planting 40 trees at the estate and out in the community!

Balduck Park Planting

Our landscape staff took part in an Arbor Day celebration and tree planting this morning on the hill at nearby Balduck Park in Detroit.

We teamed up with about 40 high school students from East English Village Preparatory Academy, plus arborists and landscapers from the City of Detroit Forestry Department and the nonprofit Greening of Detroit.
With guidance from the landscapers, the students planted 19 trees up and down the hill! The Norway spruces were donated by the Ford House from our Winter Wonderland Trim-A-Tree Contest.
The students were proud to add to the landscape at Balduck, and promised to come back and watch their young trees grow!

Restoring Historic Trees at Ford House
Meanwhile, back at Ford House we also planted about 20 new trees, both to replace trees lost in the recent storm and to help restore the original canopy.
Over time, our landscape team estimates we have lost a significant portion of the leafy canopy over the estate, to things like disease and weather.
The plantings are part of our greater plan for further restoration of the historic Jens Jensen-designed landscape, which has earned Ford House a National Historic Landmark designation!

You can read more about these projects here. And be sure to visit Ford House soon to see the new trees, as well as all the flowering trees that are starting to add color to the estate!
