Here’s why the Main House is closed for tours, now through April 1
Posted: January 23, 2020

It’s our annual winter closure, Jan. 6 through March 31. Ever wonder why?

During this time, we are working hard to protect, preserve and restore hundreds of historical treasures throughout Edsel and Eleanor’s gorgeous 90+ year old home. By taking a break from tours and the foot traffic through the House, our skilled Collections team can dig into deep cleaning and preservation care. We even bring in outside experts to take on some specialized and more intensive projects, so we can keep the House preserved for generations to see, as beautiful as it was the day Edsel, Eleanor, Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William Clay moved in, in 1928.

In addition to several deep-cleaning projects, this year’s efforts will include:

·         An in-depth project to properly repair the canvas on the walls and ceiling of the House’s second floor.

·         The replacement of all light bulbs throughout the House with LED equivalents, a more environmentally sustainable option.

·         Begin work on creating new cushions for the patio furniture on the Terrace – the large patio on the lakeside of the House (where visitors can sit and enjoy the views!).

·         Rehabilitate the drape systems throughout the House so they are all operational.

·         Reinstall antique chandeliers on the barrel-vaulted ceiling of the Gallery, which had been removed temporarily to make space for last year’s holiday decorations.

·         Install a new, custom-made reproduction rug in the Cloister.

·         Begin to prepare three of our one-of-a-kind historical collection vehicles to be displayed in the new exhibit Driven by Design, opening in late 2020 with the opening of our new Visitor Center! (The world’s only 1939 Lincoln Continental Prototype, the 1932 Model 18 Speedster, and the 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster.)

It’s too early to call it spring cleaning, but we have plenty to keep us busy until then. See you for tours starting April 1!

In the meantime, keep an eye on fordhouse.org/events for special events here on the estate. If you’re a member, don’t forget: With your membership card, you may come enjoy winter walks and beautiful snowy views on the grounds.
