Playhouse Garden Grows Again
Posted: June 12, 2017

Once upon a time, Edsel and Eleanor Ford had a small vegetable garden planted alongside their daughter Josephine's Playhouse.

This year, our Edsel & Eleanor Ford House Landscape and Gardening staff has re-created that garden from the 1930s to give visitors a new look into the estate’s history!

Landscape Foreman Joe Cielinski led the project. He used historic photos, drawings and documents to determine the location and layout original vegetable garden.

The garden was around for only a few years, but through his research Joe was able to identify most of the plants in the original. He then sourced heirloom seeds to keep the garden as authentic as possible.

Joe and the landscape staff grew all of the plants on site in our new greenhouse. They planted lettuces, radishes, carrots, red sorrel, Swiss chard, onions, beets, broccoli and rutabagas.

Be sure to stop by the Playhouse this summer and see their fruits of their labor!
