Concerts on the Lake: 'Straight Ahead'
Music on the lakeside lawn is a rite of summer. Come enjoy the jazz sounds of Straight Ahead for a fun evening! Spread out a picnic and soak in the summer evening splendor.

- Includes a chair in our reserved seating area

Grounds open at 5 p.m. and the concert starts at 7 p.m. You may bring a picnic, but no outside alcohol is allowed. Bags may be subject to search.
Food and beverages, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase from The Speedster in our Visitor Center, or you can make a reservation for our restaurant, The Continental, before the show. Folding chairs and blankets are welcome. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be postponed to June 12.

Out of Detroit’s lively jazz scene, which has produced some of the best musicians in the world comes the groundbreaking jazz group Straight Ahead. A group of strong, inventive instrumentalists and vocalists, they have shown themselves to be powerful and imaginative composers and arrangers.
Widely recognized for their eclectic and soulful approach to creating music, the Straight Ahead sound ranges comfortably from mainstream jazz, contemporary jazz, Latin, and jazzy hip-hop. Their live performances are a dynamic celebration of power and joy with a wide range of musical textures, moods, and tempos.
Straight Ahead was introduced to the world as a finalist in the “Sony Innovators” competition. A national competition recognizing exceptional performers in the jazz field. They received international exposure when they were invited to open for the legendary Nina Simone at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland. The ensemble has shared the concert stage with a who’s who of the music world including Kem, Jean Luc Ponty, Nancy Wilson, Roy Ayers, Tony Bennett, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Max Roach, the Yellow-jackets, and Dianne Reeves.
With 5 recordings to its credit, Straight Ahead has established itself as one of jazz’s most enduring and prolific groups. The group’s first two recordings for Atlantic Jazz “Look Straight Ahead” and “Body and Soul”, produced by legendary drummer/producer Lenny White made the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart “Top 20”. “Dance of the Forest Rain” their evocative 3rd release was produced by Bob Belden. “City Cuts” and “Still Swinging” are riveting recent releases.
These Grammy-nominated recording artists have traveled extensively in the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe garnering rave reviews. Joy, Power, Love, Wisdom…..Magic! This is the sound of what is to come.
