Talk: History of Dance in America
Before the To Sangana and Company One performance at Ford House, Karen Prall and Lisa LaMarre, faculty with the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance at Wayne State University will give a talk about the history of dance.
Learn how Africa has influenced dance and music here in America, and in turn how America has influenced African dance and music, and why dance matters today. Preceding the talk, Ford House staff will offer a brief overview of the family’s interest in dancing — Edsel and Eleanor Ford met in dance class and continued to enjoy dancing throughout their lives.
After the talk, stay for the performance! Wayne State Dance Companies To Sangana and Company One will perform a combination of contemporary dance together with colorful traditional costumes and live drumming, bringing the Lake Shore Room to life with vocal call and responses in the language of the Lari and Lingala.
