Geese Are Nesting on Grounds
Spring is here, and that means some of our feathered friends are nesting on the grounds. While exploring, please be aware of geese, as they can be protective of their nests. For your safety, we advise all guests to walk at their own risk and give geese plenty of space. Thank you for helping us respect our wildlife! 🦆🌿
A Passion for European Art: The Collecting and Travels of Edsel and Eleanor Ford and Their Legacy of Philanthropy at the Detroit Institute of Arts
DATE: Thursday, June 12, 2025
Time: 7 p.m.
AGE RANGE: Adults 18+
ABOUT THIS EVENT:
Presented by Dr. Alan P. Darr, Senior Curator of European Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Walter B. Ford II Family Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts
Eleanor and Edsel Ford shared a deep love of art and philanthropy—a passion that shaped their lives and legacy. Guided by their close friend and mentor, Dr. William Valentiner, the esteemed Director of the Detroit Institute of Arts from 1924 to 1945, the Fords developed a lifelong commitment to supporting the arts in Detroit and beyond.
In 1925, at Dr. Valentiner’s recommendation, Edsel Ford was appointed to the DIA’s Arts Commission Board, the museum’s highest governing body. From that point on, both Edsel and Eleanor became active patrons of the DIA, generously supporting acquisitions, exhibitions, and the museum’s growth.
Dr. Valentiner introduced the Fords to the art of collecting Old Masters, traveling with them through Italy and personally guiding them through museums and historic sites. Their first major purchase, Fra Angelico’s Annunciation—a radiant pair of Renaissance oil panels—was initially loaned to the DIA before finding a home at Gaukler Pointe.
In the 1930s, Edsel Ford partnered with Valentiner once again to commission the now-iconic Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera, a 27-panel fresco cycle that remains a centerpiece of the DIA—and a National Historic Landmark.
Over more than five decades, the Ford family’s contributions to the DIA helped shape one of the country’s most respected art collections. In this special lecture, Dr. Darr will explore that legacy through rare photographs of the Fords’ travels and images of masterworks they helped bring to the DIA, offering insight into their enduring commitment to art, culture, and community.
This program is presented in conjunction with Ford House’s 2025 exhibition, Wish You Were Here: Unpacking Ford Family Travel, which celebrates the Fords’ spirit of discovery and lasting cultural impact.
