Charlotte Ford and the Ford Look

Opening Saturday, MAY 11. Closes September 22.

Charlotte Ford's Fashion Line Logo

As the daughter of Henry Ford II, Charlotte grew up in the public eye. Her mother, Anne McDonnell Ford, had long been interested in fashion – she was declared best dressed in the 1950s. It was only natural that Charlotte, too, developed an elegant sense of style.

In 1976, Charlotte released a boutique fashion line. While she didn’t design the clothing herself, her preferences and tastes influenced the creation of the pieces. Charlotte stated, “I wanted to do something geared to the working girl who doesn’t have a lot of time to spend running around.”

The result was a collection of separates put together as well-coordinated outfits. Skirts, pants, or knickers, all with their own sweaters or jackets, and shirts that looked as though someone had spent a good deal of time putting them together. These casual-chic, preassembled outfits became known as “the Ford look.”

Enjoy this unique exhibition showcasing Charlotte Ford’s fashion line, on exhibit in the Ivory Guest Room of the Main Residence from May 11 through September 22.
